My Master's thesis research was conducted at the Centre for the Future of Places (CFP) - a research unit situated within KTH's Department of Urban Planning and Environment. My research, overseen and supervised by senior researchers within the CFP, sought to investigate the impact of environmental factors on loneliness and social isolation in contemporary cities (with Stockholm as a case study).This formed part of wider thematic research within the CFP, focusing on addressing the issue of loneliness through built environment interventions. Loneliness is increasingly understood as a significant physical and mental health concern in modern society, and cities in particular. The causal effects of environmental factors on mental health generally remains underexplored within urban planning disciplines.

Our Future Cities is a non-profit organisation working across the fields of urban development - including housing, transport, public space, sustainability and planning. It aims to improve democracy and action towards the creation of more equitable, progressive and bold cities.Through social media, publishing, events, research, and creative collaborations with the public, private and civil society sectors, it aims to expand citizen access to urbanism, and co-create, co-design and advocate for improvements to public spaces. I worked on various projects including a strategy to improve walkability within Durban's inner city, research into the development of urban university campuses, and an extensive public comment objecting to the development of an exclusionary new housing development in the Cape Town inner-city.

I was one of only two candidate attorneys at a general corporate/commercial law firm with eight directors. As a result, I gained exposure to a wide variety of legal fields, especially general litigation, wills and estates, trusts, and commercial contracts. I was also able to hone my research skills, regularly doing legal research regarding ongoing legal matters for the firm.I also made at least 15 Magistrates’ Court appearances, handling everything from commercial claims to evictions (both for and against) to debtor’s court. I spent a large part of my time getting to understand the inner workings of the Western Cape High Court, the Deeds and Master’s Offices, and the various Magistrates’ Courts around Cape Town.
