About Daniel Campos

I have a bachelor's and master's degree in engineering, a licentiate degree in mathematics, and I am working towards completing a doctoral degree in electrical engineering. As an engineer, I received technical investigative training, and my mathematical background contributes to the understanding and modeling of systems.I have experience in applied mathematics and Statistics, which led me to work with the computer programming languages Python, C, and C++. I also work with the software Matlab. My experience with those technologies is in the field of mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and computer simulations: implementation of statistical models for time-series forecasting, simulation of mathematical models of non-linear systems (systems engineering), and applications in coding theory (telecommunications engineering).

    Researching in the field of Modeling, Control, and Optimization of Systems. Automatic control systems are part of daily life for many people. They are present in buildings (e.g., temperature conditioning systems), vehicles (e.g., ABS control), and aircraft (e.g., aircraft autopilot systems). Generally speaking, a central computer collects information from sensors, analyzes, and takes decisions to make a particular device behave in a previously established manner with no need for human intervention. The main motivation for my master's research was to model and control poorly known systems, that is, systems for which only a rough mathematical model is available.

    I participated in the University's Undergraduate Research Programme. That gave me the opportunity to work on the application of Computational Intelligence and Statistical Methods to time series forecasting. Our research project developed a system to predict the increase in the concentration of the fine particles in the air of the metropolitan region of Recife (Pernambuco state, Brazil), which would help the public health care system in the prevention of respiratory diseases, a public health problem in Brazil. Another motivation was to use the same system to predict the São Francisco River's daily flow over the year. The São Francisco River is located in the northeast region of Brazil. Its water flow rate is an essential parameter for hydroelectric power plants. I first worked in the collecting of the data and in the application of interpolation methods to tackle missing data. My main contribution to the project was to construct a program in C capable of reading the data sets and applying statistical models to forecast hourly concentrations of particulate matter in the air and to forecast the average daily flow of the river.
