Entering his 40th year in academia, Duke focuses his work on turning around low-performing schools. After helping to develop the University of Virginia's School Turnaround Specialist Program (a joint operation of the Curry School of Education and the Darden Graduate School of Business Administration), he worked on the Texas Turnaround Leadership Academy and the Florida Turnaround Leaders Program. Prior to these activities, Duke created the Thomas Jefferson Center for Educational Design, a multi-disciplinary think tank of scholars and practitioners in education, architecture, engineering, and sociology. Prior to coming to the University of Virginia, Duke served on the faculty of Stanford University's School of Education and helped to launch the graduate school at Lewis and Clark University. Duke's 33rd book has just been published. Leadership for Low-Performing Schools (Rowman & Littlefield, 2015) provides a step-by-step guide to the school turnaround process as well as a comprehensive review of research on the improvement of struggling schools.
