Starting as a seasonal temp over the Christmas period, I very quickly felt comfortable with this company and the people running the store. When I saw the supervisor position being advertised I knew that I had to apply. I've recently started my new post as supervisor and am glad to be working with such an amazing team.

I've always been fascinated with high end technology and the natural world. I knew that I wanted to create something at the intersection of craftsmanship and AI technology. So in my spare time I have explored and created a range of handmade marquetry boxes. The designs are created using naturally occurring mathematical relationships, illustration and AI image generation techniques. The marquetry itself is designed on a computer, cut with a laser and constructed by hand. The flexibility of this process allows me to be as creative as I like whilst maintaining a high standard of quality. I am currently having a lot of fun designing and manufacturing my creations whilst exploring various options for outlets. Take a look at my Instagram and Etsy store for just some of my work.

During this period of change in my career I made sure to make the most of my time. I worked with a local Graphic designer to assist with the implementation and realisation of various graphic design projects and print ready artwork. Having been in education for so many years I needed to build up my (neglected) portfolio of work, to show that I could practice what I preach. A valuable experience that helped me grow as a contemporary commercial designer.

As well as being the course leader and lecturer for Product Design (3D), I am also the art department’s course leader for A level Graphic Design & Illustration. I mainly work with 16-19 year olds, but have taught pre 16 and adult learners also. My duties include, imparting subject knowledge and skills, curriculum design, planning & implementation, supporting and developing ICT, literacy and numeracy skills, recording and reporting progress, internal moderation, supporting staff with cpd and professional practice. It is essential to have a flexible approach, large subject knowledge and broad skill set to utilise when negotiating the nuances associated with meeting the learners individual needs.

Being self-employed has taught me many things, mainly what I didn’t know. But I am proud to say that over time I have acquired and developed many new proficiencies including marketing, advertising, sales, administration, finance, product design and development, manufacturing, quality control, packaging & distribution, customer care, and overall business management.The products I developed and produced were mainly based around the capabilities of my laser cutter Bertha. They included jewellery, accessories, clocks, coasters, candle sticks, wall sculpture, etched wine bottles, mirrors, furniture, light shades, specialist display cases, cake stands, Raspberry Pi cases, scarfs and up-cycled clothing.I get a great deal of satisfaction from both the process and the end result. In my view there is no greater feeling than that of creation.

I like to see myself as a catalyst or creative guide; someone who will help the students broaden their knowledge & skill base, whilst bringing out their creative potential. I’ve had the pleasure of working with a wide range of students at varying levels of ability, nurturing skills development in areas such as creative thinking, idea generation & development, time management, communication, presentation, evaluation and analysis, ITC, specialist vocabulary, teamwork and self directed learning. As well as exploring a range of hands on skills such as printing, ceramics, paper & cardboard engineering, photography, animation, drawing, sketching, painting, model making, casting & mold making, Adobe Creative Suit, wire work and many others.I have worked with the staff to develop learning resources and strategy, accompany educational trips, and work on projects such as the annual textiles fashion show, annual art exhibition and liaison development material.

Whilst at Tigerprint I designed and produced several packages and toys that eventually made it onto the store shelves. I was responsible for problem solving and product development; ensuring that products were efficiently produced and safe for children to play with. During this time I honed my prototyping and professional practice skills. Even though I was only on a 6 week placement I was glad to be part of the team and felt valued as a designer. It was this placement that inspired me to start my own business.
