I was responsible for uncovering news, delivering analysis, and crafting features and explainer articles about foreign affairs and defence along with federal politics more generally. A major focus during this period was to help readers make sense of the rupture in diplomatic relations with China followed by the steady-but-fragile recovery and the implications of the AUKUS pact. I have used freedom of information laws extensively to reveal details the public should know, including over processing delays in helping some Afghan citizens at risk of retribution as the Taliban seized power, and internal deliberations over the response to Israel's assault on Gaza.

As a freelance journalist based in Tokyo, I wrote news and feature articles about Japan for an international audience. I also wrote extensively about developments on the Korean Peninsula and across the region. My articles appeared in publications including The Guardian, NBC News, The Times of London and The Diplomat. Highlights include in-depth pieces on the tense negotiations behind the Kyoto Protocol on the 20th anniversary of the landmark meeting (Asia Times and Lowy Interpreter) and a feature article on the plight of women forcibly sterilised under Japan's now-defunct eugenics law (The Guardian).

As political correspondent, I filed reports on major breaking stories in national affairs while contributing analysis and feature articles. This included in-depth coverage of a proposed overhaul of the university sector, leading to a commendation in the 2015 National Press Club/Universities Australia Higher Education Media Awards for reporting/commentary on policy implications. I also reported on other contentious budget cuts; the G20 summit in Brisbane; a series of changes to terrorism laws; and leadership tensions within the Coalition government that culminated in Malcolm Turnbull ousting Tony Abbott as prime minister.

I covered education, employment and workplace relations while working in Fairfax Media's Parliament House bureau in the lead-up to, and aftermath, of the 2013 election. It was a tumultuous year in Australian politics, with the country's first female prime minister, Julia Gillard, being removed from the leadership by her predecessor, Kevin Rudd, who subsequently led the Labor party to electoral defeat. I broke a series of stories about the Gonski education reforms, which were aimed at ensuring funding flowed to the most needy schools. I also reported on a workplace bullying crackdown, an overhaul of the superannuation system, and parliamentary expenses scandals. The stories were published by Fairfax's metropolitan publications including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Canberra Times, brisbanetimes.com.au and WAtoday.com.au.

I reported health, business and general news for Fairfax Media's brisbanetimes.com.au before taking on the specific role of state political reporter. This included covering the 2009 and 2012 Queensland state election campaigns; conducting video interviews with the premier and opposition leader to scrutinise their proposals; and launching a "spin check" series to debunk politicians' claims. I received the Queensland Child Protection Week 2012 media and communications award for coverage of child safety job cuts and foster care issues.

I reported on a wide range of local issues - including urban affairs, housing development, environmental protection, tourism, the drought, youth violence, and council news - for the twice-weekly newspapers The Redland Times and Bayside Bulletin, other related publications, and the website. My employment at the papers began with casual shifts and then a full-time cadetship, which I juggled with my final university studies.
