In my role as Field Engineer I visit our Southern Centres from Cardiff to East London doing regular health checks, updating and upgrading hardware and software in a working environment and training staff members on new and existing equipment. I visit sites with particularly difficult issues to diagnose and resolve them documenting any changes made to site to help spread the knowledge so it can be diagnosed easier next time and from our helpdesk team based in head office. I have also recently finished building new servers using Windows Server 2012 R2 rolling out this and VMware servers to upgrade our current kit to align it with new standards and security. A project I am currently working on, changing out our current admin desktops onsite with a virtual solution will save the Helpdesk team huge amounts of time when repairing these desktops, it will reduce the amount of time to initially setup each machine on top of saving the company money on hardware.As well as my other projects I am working on a dependency document which will help new staff and other departments know which software, which hardware and what phone lines are critical in keeping the core essentials running smoothly. Within my position as IT Engineer I ensure that all of our 110+ centres have all of their IT equipment working from servers to printers. It is partly a helpdesk role and part field based. I spend about 25% of my time in the office as a 6 man team, resolving issues over the phone via TeamViewer and logging the issues on the IT helpdesk.Part of this is to be able to explain to untrained on-site staff how to fix a problem in an easy to understand way so that we can have the problem resolved quickly and save a trip out to site. The other 75% of my time is spent travelling the UK alone setting up new sites or refitting old sites with new IT equipment. What is entailed in that is setting up 35 - 45 virtual machines, setting up the networking and server and plugging in all the new equipment, screens, L300’s, phone systems and standard desktops. Currently I repair all types of hardware and software issues from XP – Windows 8.1, Office 97 – 2012 and many other software programs. I enjoy building high end custom gaming desktops from scratch and to customers’ requirements. I repair laptops down to the motherboard dealing with overheating, hard drive malfunctions, broken screens, broken keyboards and hinges. I have setup networks for some small business’s running cables, configuring routers, setting up network printers and powerlines. I managed my own team of 10 checkout staff members. This included ensuring their KPI's were met and that they were all happy, working hard and giving great customer service everyday. Part of my daily duties was running the entire checkout department of 47 checkouts in one of the biggest Tesco supermarkets in the country. It would range from ensuring tills were open, queues were dealt with, customer and staff queries and keeping the department running smoothly.
