Dan's areas of primary focus include sustainability, environmental law, environmental justice, ESG, business law and ethics, compliance, risk management, the Freedom of Information Act, and negotiations (including mediation). He practices, teaches, and consults in the U.S. and abroad, and has lectured on five continents. He has appeared on BBC World News television, and regularly in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Financial Times, and Guardian.Prior to launching Jacobs Sustainability, Dan had a distinguished career both in public service and academia. After serving as a law clerk to a U.S. Court of Appeals judge, he joined the Justice Department, where he won awards as lead counsel in high-profile environmental and civil rights cases across the country. Next, he joined the State Department's Office of the Legal Adviser, winning an award for his work in international arbitration. He then served as an Office Director and Senior Negotiator in the State Department's Economic, Energy, and Business Bureau, leading major diplomatic initiatives. Following his public service in Washington, D.C., Dan began an equally accomplished career in academia. As founding faculty director of the first interdisciplinary graduate program in sustainability management in a U.S. business school, he led American University to a #1 national sustainability specialty ranking by Bloomberg Businessweek. While at American and a visiting scholar at UCLA's Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, Dan wrote "BP Blowout: Inside the Gulf Oil Disaster," the #1 listed book published by the Brookings Institution in fall 2016. He also taught environmental policy and law courses at George Washington University and Middlebury College. After taking the California Bar and relocating to Los Angeles, Dan joined Loyola Marymount University's faculty, serving first as Visiting Associate Professor and then as Clinical Associate Professor. Next, he served as Senior Counsel in the Environmental Law Clinic at the University of California, Irvine. Dan also has served for two decades as an instructor for the National Institute for Trial Advocacy. He argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals (9th Cir.) in 2021 and 2022, and is scheduled to do so again in early 2025.An avid international traveler and fitness enthusiast, Dan studied three foreign languages and competed in four club sports while earning his three university degrees.
