As a Senior Officer in Energy Delivery, I am designated Project Manager for a range of renewable energy developments on the Welsh Government Woodland Estate. These include developments include: windfarms (developments wholly located within the estate), third party access agreements (for developments on private land where the estate is used to access) and grid routes (involving use of wayleaves / easements across the estate).Main duty is to ensure that developments successfully integrate into a publicly-accessible, commercial forest. This is achieved by initially creating a feasible project liaising between the developer and internal specialists covering aspects of the project such as civil engineering, environmental, forestry, estates, conservation and recreation. This then forms the basis of a Land Property Consultation (LPC) where local, operational teams are consulted on the development. As this advances, it progresses to sign off by senior signatories, Executive Team, Finance Committee and finally the NRW Board.

Covering south west Wales, I was principally responsible for the monitoring of environmental compliance of DCWW raw water abstractions and reporting of raw reservoir storage to inform the water situation.This involved collating data from DCWW, contractor & third party sensors and comparing these to tolerances on water flow / level including comparison with other readings to ensure data accuracy. Where applicable, I would also complete on-site surveying through a combination of land surveying and flow gauging which would help to validate / refine computational flow monitoring. I led on the use of PowerBI for water situation reporting, capitalising on the use of a new hydrometric database to provide data and removing the need for reliance of spreadsheets. Drawing on previous experience of managing contractors, I organised routine maintenance of some raw water abstraction assets such as stream intakes. This including appraising the site for constraints / reasonably foreseeable risks, working with the contractor to develop a suitable safe system of work and supervising the works.

Based in the South Wales office, main duties relate to the completion of environmental permits on behalf of various client for submission to regulators. Applications include new applications, variations to existing permits and discharge of pre-operational / improvement conditions relating to existing permits.Drawing on my experience as an Engineering Geologist, I also handle any Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) projects in relation to intrusive works such as site investigations and installation of groundwater monitoring boreholes. My responsibilities often include, design of the investigation / installation, submission of a CQA Plan to the appropriate regulator, organisation of sub-contractors, site supervision and submission of the CQA Validation Report.To assist other areas of the business, I am now being mentored in the supervision of construction of landfill liners. This involves attending site to supervise the construction of a Trial Pad, assessment of material suitability via geotechnical laboratory testing and part-time supervision of the on-going construction of the liner post-approval by the regulator. The variety of projects which you I am exposed to has allowed me to continue working towards my professional goals of becoming a Chartered Member of CIWM (MCIWM) and Charted Geologist with the BGS (CGeol).

As an Engineering Geologist/Geo-environmental Engineer I am responsible for supervising fieldwork activities, undertaking geoenvironmental inspections, logging of rocks and soils, insitu testing and compiling of factual/interpretive geo-environmental reports and logs.Fieldwork activities (which are carried out in accordance with BS5930:1999 - Code of Practice for Site Investigations) include:Trial pittingSoakaway/infiltration testing.Geotechnical drilling (dynamic sampling, rotary coring, undisturbed sampling).Monitoring of installations for water level and gas content.My role also involves a large amount of site supervision, this includes acting as a site liaison between GEL and client representatives.

Whilst maintaining my responsibilities as a Data Engineer, I was responsible for a crew of upto three personnel consisting of one Data Engineer and two Logging Geologists.I was the company's representative at the well-site and attend daily departmental meetings to report back to the client regarding logging specific operations.If new Data Engineers are assigned to the crew it was my job to mentor them in the use of company software, Halliburton's operational standards and to ensure they are practicing high standards of Health & Safety.

Reporting to the Data Engineer, I was responsible for collecting cuttings samples from the drilling fluid. I then described the cuttings and identified the lithology before logging it into the computer to create a formation evaluation log.Once drilling was complete, my main tasks was to ensure cuttings were packaged according to client specifications and sent back onshore for archive purposes.

Out of the dozens of candidates that applied, I was chosen to take up the scholarship.Working directly with the team, I was involved in projects at many different stages gaining experience in liaising with different staff as well as technical skills. This gave me a great insight as to how a big, multi-disciplined consultancy operates with respect to client relationships and organisation within the department.
