When I became a lawyer in 1988 I committed myself to helping people fight back against powerful corporations and insurance companies. My firm of Berman & Simmons has been the perfect place to do exactly that. Our firm works exclusively with plaintiffs in personal injury, product liability and medical malpractice cases. Thanks to the support of my partners at Berman & Simmons I have a practice limited to complex personal injury and product liability matters, including controversial cases that play out in the public spotlight. and I am fortunate to be among a select group of lawyers (mostly from Berman & Simmons) who have achieved jury trial verdicts in excess of $1 million. My particular interest in mechanical and design failures has resulted in verdicts and settlements for victims killed or injured by all types of defectively designed machines, including vehicles such as ATVs, snowmobiles, motorcycles, cars, trucks, and trucks. Much of our success at Berman & Simmons comes from our intentional model of collaboration. We prioritize bringing multiple lawyers to bear, as no one can match our combined experience and depth. Our results speak for themselves - well over $1b in monies recovered, in Maine's biggest and most visible cases. Growing up in Bangor, I learned the value of hard work, civic responsibility, and maintaining virtue and authenticity in all aspects of life. My partners at Berman & Simmons share these values, which has aided my professional practice immensely. We take on clients whose personal stories resonate with the values developed in my youth – and I know we prize the trust our clients place in us to advocate for them against tough odds. I have served the Maine Trial Lawyers Association as governor since 1996, and am Maine's senior governor serving on then national board of the American Association for Justice in Washington, D.C. I am a contributing author for the Guide to Superior Court Practice in Maine on the topic of Trial Advocacy. I speak regularly on tort law and trial advocacy at legal education seminars, and I have authored legal articles on a wide range of subjects, including maximizing recovery in complex cases, presentation of expert witnesses, client communication, product liability, and injuries from public attractions (amusement parks, parades) and transportation.
