About Daniel Chao

I am a physician-scientist, drug developer, entrepreneur and retina specialist. My current position is as Associate Vice President and Head of Ophthalmology where I am responsible for clinical development of assets for ophthalmology diseases as well as working with our discovery teams to develop our early stage pipeline in Ophthalmology.I was previously Executive Medical Director and Clinical Development Leader at Johnson and Johnson, where I led the Early Clinical Development/Translational Medicine group in Specialty Ophthalmology at Johnson and Johnson as well as clinical development for a number of late stage trials. I am also a physician scientist, fellowship trained vitreoretinal surgeon and board certified ophthalmologist. Previously to Johnson and Johnson, I was an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology for 5 years where I was a physician surgeon-scientist running an NIH funded translational research program focused on the pathogenesis of macular degeneration. I have published over 50 peer reviewed manuscripts across both basic science and clinical research, was scientific co-founder of a company developing new therapeutics for dry AMD based on lab work at UCSD as well as led clinical development for a medical device company in the retina space.
