About Daniel Lane
PhD in Biomedical Engineering within the Optical and Radiology laboratories at Washington University in St. Louis, specializing in semiconductor and polymer nanoparticles for radical oxygen species therapy and in vivo imaging. Currently researching titanium dioxide nanomaterials for photosensitized radiation stimulated therapy through crystal dimension, size and surface modification and analyzing these materials through dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Additional research is focused on polymer materials for drug delivery relying on my skills with high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), column purification methods and assay based chemical determination. All this information was effectively relayed to the scientific community through journal publications and conference talks utilizing Power Point, Word, Excel, Inkscapes, Prism, MatLab, Comsol, and Living Image software to produce figures and effectively communicate my hypotheses. I entered a PhD program to advance nanoscale delivery methods as I saw a deficit in effective methods to transport and control the plethora of chemical and biological agents developed by science. In working on titanium dioxide, I have improved further on the delivery of inorganic materials to drive site specific uptake through protein targeting, dimension manipulation and surface chemistry. While in this process I was shown the importance of multi-disciplinary collaboration, individual focus and team leadership on completing complex biological projects. Directing and learning mouse handling, cell culture (both cancer cell and stem cell), protein analysis, peptide design, fluorescent imaging, chemical modification (DCC, click and thiol chemistries), and immune panel analysis. With this experience I now wish to apply my material and therapeutic knowledge to the next generation of in vivo therapeutics, focusing on DNA/RNA delivery and immune manipulation. Additionally, I seek a collaborative scientific environment to vet ideas and form a community like the one I found in my years in St. Louis.
