I am currently employed by Nature Parks in the role of ‘Coastal Dependent Bird Species Ranger’. My major roles at Nature Parks include Hooded Plover monitoring (specifically nest searching, flag reading, chick wardening, banding, erecting protection equipment), presenting workshops and season debreifs, organising and conducting community awareness raising events, conducting recruiting events and volunteer training, the management and data analysis of Hooded Plover breeding and sighting data, liaising with volunteers/volunteer coordinators as well as writing short and long term reports for volunteers and land managers.I am also currently in the final stages of a PhD at Deakin University under the supervision of Associate Professor Mike Weston (Deakin University), Dr Craig Sherman (Deakin University), Dr Grannie Maguire (BirdLife Australia), Professor Marcel Klaassen (Deakin University) and Dr Peter Dann (Phillip Island Nature Parks). This project entitled ‘sex-ratio variation among resident shorebirds’ will identify the mechanisms causing an observed sex-ratio bias in Red-capped Plovers and compare it with two other species (the Hooded Plover and Masked Lapwing) whose adult sex-ratio is still unknown.
