With the intention of developing a retirement home and a sustainable small business, Dan and Carol designed developed and delivered a small home in Southwest Michigan near Saugatuck and Douglas. The goal was to edit living to its simple and sustainable form and to link indoor and outdoor activities. Simplicity meant inexpensive materials, low maintenance and utility costs and enough space to encourage living without unnecessary additions. Insulated foundations and finished concrete floors, south facing glass, 6"​ SIPS walls and 12" ceilings, quality windows,sky-tubes in kitchen and baths, heated floors, mini-split supplementary heat and air, well planned natural ventilation, allowances for further development of the landscape and necessary out-buildings, simple materials and durable finishes all contributed to the space both inside and out. Cost per square ft is $140, not including the construction management fee, which was donated for this project.Hardscape and landscape are being completed. We have been business analysts and information developers for Pharmacia, Pfizer and consulted for Performance Management. We created an on-line curriculum and training for several thousand employees to meet new e-sig regulations and integrated these changes into preexisting change-management procedures. We have created employee handbooks, job descriptions, evaluation procedures and instruments, job-aids, and visual presentations using current software. As a full professor to both private and public colleges, Dan has developed and taught on-line and on-site classes in General Education and Business and designed and supervised Curriculum for colleges. As department head for a multicampus college 20 years Dan managed a large group of people successfully and sustainably. Dan co-led the writing and editing for National Accreditation reports resulting in successful reaccreditation. Also, before his retirement from full time teaching, Dan help integrate critical thinking in all areas of a large college with three campuses in South Florida. He created and led cross-departmental activities that resulted in students being more prepared for life and work.Dan has continued to teach composition and literature courses online for Palm Beach State College. His classes receive positive reviews for encouraging students to think critically as part of writing.
