We're jacks of all trades. Any problems affecting train operations, we are called into action to troubleshoot and resolve the issues and get everything back to working order. I have to maintain knowledge of electrical (low voltage and high voltage), electronics, mechanical, and communication systems. Reading and comprehending schematics and diagrams ensures I can trace any circuit to know how each subsystem does its part to achieve overall operations. Signals and Communications combine electrical circuits, electronic devices, and PLC communications to establish a network that communicates train operations and track conditions to a custom graphical interface that is displayed on monitors throughout headquarters. Loop detectors and track circuits determine train routes and signal indications for safe passage.System grade crossings use transmit and receive frequency components to detect trains to operate gates for safe passage through roadway and railroad intersections. Traction Power Substations use high voltage AC breakers, step down transformers, and AC to DC rectifiers to take 12kv AC utility power and convert it to 700 volts DC to provide power to trains. Substations are equipped with safety devices that provide inputs to PLC communications to ensure safety from high voltage equipment and for troubleshooting purposes. Communications use HMI display to inform personnel of building and system faults.The overhead power lines is the source that directly gives the trolley carts power. Inspection of the mechanical aspects and feeder cables is critical to ensuring the wires stay up in the air and powering the trolleys for service. We operate bucket lift trucks for inspections and repairs. We use tools such as clamps, chain hoists, come alongs, and rigging straps to control wire tension when repairs are needed.
