During my internship at the PGJCCR Remote Summer Research Programme, I worked alongside GenoME Diagnostics. This involved continuing previous research from my GenoME Diagnostics summer internship in June 2022 into the identification and validation of blood-based early detection cancer biomarkers. I was required to work with other laboratory members to test the expression of previously researched biomarkers from our list to evaluate their specificity to Breast, Ovarian and Pancreatic cancers. Furthermore, we designed primers and optimised their specificity to our biomarkers through analysing their optimum annealing temperatures. I was tasked with maintaining the health of our patient cells in tissue culture through utilising aseptic technique and extracting patient DNA for use in our experiments.From these results I produced a full study with the aim of identifying blood-based DNAme biomarkers to potentially produce a reliable and accurate test for early diagnosis of High-Grade Serous Carcinoma. Then I presented my findings to the staff members of the Patrick G. Johnson Centre for Cancer Research.

During my time at the GenoMe Summer Internship Program I was involved in research into the identification and validation of blood-based early detection cancer biomarkers. Together with GenoME we investigated target genes and their effects on both breast and ovarian tumour cell growth using the presence of methylation as a key indicator for cancerous samples. This internship initially involved identifying biomarkers specific to breast and ovarian cancers utilising the NCBI database. Then developing laboratory procedure to amplify the product of our chosen biomarker in patient tissue and plasma for normal versus tumour cohorts using both end-point PCR and Quantitative PCR.Part of my responsibilities was maintaining the health of our patient cells in tissue culture while adhering to aseptic technique, and presenting my findings in laboratory meetings which were then discussed in a group setting.

I worked for premiere people, an agency in which I worked for their client, the Northern Ireland Diabetic Eye Screening Programme as a Failsafe Officer. The main role of this position was making sure the NIDESP was following government guidance. This mainly meant discharging patients from the care of the Hospital Eye Service into the care of the DESP for eye screening if they had not been seen by an ophthalmologist within an allotted timeframe depending on the patient's condition. This job entailed working with excel and looking at a patient data base, and making judgement calls over if a patient needs to be seen by the DESP.

I worked for MPA recruitment agency as a cleaner for our client BT. This job mainly consists of time management as I have to time how long it would take to clean an entire floor, judge what needs cleaning and prioritise accordingly. These duties involve mainly working by myself and using my initiative to clean dirty workspaces and potential vectors such as door handles and desktops.

I used my experience volunteering at a charity shop at Barnardo's to apply and succeed in acquiring a customer assistant role at Tesco. I worked as a customer assistant in Tesco’s on night shifts from 22:00 - 07:00, two - three nights a week. This work included stocking shelves, taking in deliveries and using heavier equipment for moving heavier stock. Duties also involved working alone, or with other employees and helping others if they encounter an obstacle they needed help with.
