In 2012 my wife and I made the giant step of opening our own business, Ohnstad Therapy Services, LLC in this Northwest area rural community with a foundation and focus on filling a need where others did not. We expanded our hours of service, provided in-home care through our partnership with an area home care agency. We have always looked to partner with our referral sources in a positive and community-centered way.We have been blessed to have wide community support and have grown to include several staff members now in providing primarily outpatient and home-based services.In 2020, after a protracted mindful process, we decided to join our business with the Fyzical franchise. It affords us several paths forward with a company that seems well-aligned with our main missions, namely helping others "Love Your Life" through pursuit of additional training, equipment, and expertise in balance and vestibular care in addition to our foundation of general outpatient therapy services.I have personally been blessed with numerous professional recommendations from area providers and surgeons, family/friends, and area businesses which have given us a great foundation.I continue to provide sport screening and sideline services through our clinic, continue to mentor students within or considering PT/PTA training, and serve on the local school board.

In this leadership role I had the opportunity to perform therapist duties and lead the staff of this multi-dimensional rural facility that included emergent care, pediatric care, SNF, acute and subacute clients, as well as outpatient and sideline athletic services. I also was responsible for community outreach and special events representing the services of the department. I served as a clinical instructor and worked with physical therapist and assistant programs in the region.

This wasn't just a summer job, it was perhaps the most formative time in my life. Then called Camp Courage, I went from being a young newbie counselor and somewhat self-centered teen to a Camp leader who was a compassionate and highly experienced caregiver, entertainer, friend, and aspiring health care professional. This is/was an organization founded by and for people with disabilities created during an era in which many of the people we served lived on the fringe of society. Camp Courage was the oasis each summer where people (kids and adults) could gather for a few days with people that could identify with them in a relaxed and fun setting in rural Minnesota. I also served in respite and a weekend host for people using the facility during the off-season. Hardest and worst paying job of my life and I was forever changed....what a gift.
