Daniel advises on all aspects of intellectual property for MicroVention, from cradle to grave, including harvesting inventions, patent prosecution, trade secret strategy, IP litigations, opinion work, due diligence, IP operations, software implementation, and training.MicroVention is a rapidly growing medical device company that has pioneered the development of catheter-based, minimally invasive, neuroendovascular technologies that provide therapeutic advantages for neurovascular disorders such as aneurysms, strokes, and neurovascular malformations.

Daniel draws on his engineering background to serve intellectual property (IP) clients in patent prosecution, opinion work, and all phases of trial and motion practice. He focuses on patent litigation in federal courts and inter partes review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He works with global companies to protect innovations relating to medical devices, automotive and aerospace components, design patents, and computer software. Having spent six years as a biomedical engineer, Daniel understands the complexities and challenges of technology design and implementation, and how these can be leveraged in patent applications and adverse proceedings.Daniel has been involved in bench trials and mock jury trials; arguing motions and discovery disputes before judges and court-appointed Special Masters; taking and defending depositions; drafting summary judgment and appellate briefs; drafting IPR and reexamination briefs; drafting pleadings on invalidity, noninfringement, and claim construction issues; and managing teams during all aspects of fact discovery. Daniel is also a contributor to the patent treatise, Robert L. Harmon et al., Patents and the Federal Circuit (Bloomberg BNA), and has held the position since 2014. In addition to IP, Daniel is committed to pro bono work. He focuses on issues related to fair housing and wrongful eviction, and has first-chaired multiple bench trials.

Daniel was an intellectual property attorney at the IP boutique Brinks Gilson & Lione for 7 years until his firm was acquired by Crowell & Moring in mid-2021.

Daniel completed a Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) fellowship at the Lawyers' Committee for Better Housing. Daniel worked primarily in the eviction defense group, representing low income tenants in housing court. OcuTherix is developing the Deep Wave Trabeculoplasty (DWT) device, a promising new non-invasive therapy intended to offer select glaucoma patients a non-drug, non-surgical option for lowering intra-ocular pressure (IOP) with a short, safe, and effective in-office treatment.

ClarVista Medical, based in Aliso Viejo, California is a leading developer of innovative products to treat challenging ophthalmic conditions. In 2012 and in conjunction with series A financing, ClarVista was spun out from Prospex Medical, a medical device incubator, to pursue the development of the HARMONI™ IOL. ClarVista has benefitted from a strong relationship with world-class venture partner, New Enterprise Associates. ClarVista is currently raising series B financing to develop and obtain CE mark of the HARMONI™ modular IOL system.

Daniel was a 2013 summer associate at Brinks Gilson & Lione before starting full time with the firm in 2014.

After earning his bio-medical engineering degree, Daniel began as an R&D engineer at Apnex Medical Inc., a St. Paul based medical device start-up company making a nerve stimulator to treat obstructive sleep apnea. As the company began FDA clinical trials, Daniel transitioned into a cross-over role with the clinical group. He was involved with patient management, developing and refining sub-study protocols, and data analysis, while contributing to Apnex's ever-expanding IP. He provided hands on training to field staff at sleep research laboratories across the United States, Australia and Europe. Daniel is a co-inventor on three pending patent applications on the topic, and co-authored three academic publications, including a 2012 article published an article in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care (citation below) demonstrating improved airflow in 30 of 30 patients during sleep. As a contributing author to this publication, Daniel not only acquired the data, but spent countless hours analyzing the data one-on-one with Dr. Alan Schwartz of the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center. As a law clerk at WCK, Daniel assisted patent attorneys in prosecuting patents across a broad range of technologies, including mechanical, electro-chemical, and software. His primary responsibilities were drafting patents, replying to office actions, and reviewing invention disclosures for patentable subject matter.

Daniel worked for a year with the Corporate Research Process Laboratory group at 3M, where he designed experiments testing electro-less plating catalysts for micron-scale metal deposition on plastic substrates.

Daniel spent a summer with the MRI Research group at the Mayo Clinic. His research focused on computer simulations in MATLAB testing resolution limits for high speed MRI “movies” tracking cranial blood flow in stroke patients.
