Home Works Utah's mission is to serve contractors by providing small local contractor companies with high paying work and providing clients with great customer service and ensuring quality work that is often missing in the construction industry. Contractors really appreciated that they could do the work that they are good at without the added stress of estimating and sales, and ensuring correct pricing. We implemented software that allows us to accurately estimate any project within 24 hours and often creating an opportunity for a one call close. My position in this small start up was to lead the technology, financial and operations functions to support the sales and project management function. In our first 7 months of business we generated $850k in revenue with roughly 17% gross profit.

I had the opportunity to take over the Quality Engineer position as COVID severely disrupted the commercial airline industry forcing Wencor to reduce its workforce. While I had a great manager, the RIF left me with no ability to receive training. I took this challenge on, reduced a 3 month backlog to a same day turn around for inspection plans where I was able to cut the project completion time by 50% by implementing software and automating excel sheets. With all my new found time I took on other improvement projects where I reduced inspection time on air gage by 25% by automating data documentation, reduced part inspection time by 50%-60% by performing a risk assessment with statistical analysis and cutting required sampling from 100% to a modified .25 AQL resulting in <1% increase in risk. I was then given more responsibilities giving me new opportunities to learn new skills and lead. I performed an internal audit in which I found 5 CAR’s resulting in improved compliance to AS9100/ISO 900. I led a root cause analysis on a PQE, where I then developed and implemented methods to improve quality department training and improved the communication of designs from engineering to manufacturing partners and quality. I acted as Quality Representative in Design Reviews, and Project Kickoff Meetings with suppliers. And I was chosen as Quality Engineer representative of new ERP implementation team to lead the creation and testing of our requirements and then created the work instructions for the software.

Wencor serves the Aerospace industry with high quality aftermarket parts for aircraft hydraulic systems, electrical systems and interiors among others. I take ownership of a part and see that part from conception through FAA approval. Using the reverse engineering process I use dimensional analysis, material analysis and part/system research to create a part that will perform as well if not better than the OEM part. I created 4 complete design packages, with 7 more projects in the pipeline and also aided in completing several other design packages. I have worked on a variety of parts including seals, springs, housings, and bolts. that are assembled into pumps, generators, braking systems and landing gear systems.

I aided in design and prototyping of an ORC heat engine that recycles waste heat to generate power. We consistently achieved 50% Carnot efficiency and often saw better. I created complete design packages (ASME Y14.5) in SolidWorks to communicate custom parts to manufacturing and machining partners. Using SolidWorks again, I designed flow patterns and plumbing. I built prototype electronics boards using a PLC to control motor drives, actuated valves, heating elements and also input information from pressure, temperature and flow sensors to monitor the heat engine. I communicated with suppliers, manufacturers, and machinists to advance our product to market. In these communications I was able to research and implement parts that simplified design, improved performance and saved costs.

I founded WanderStruck RV in the plan that I would use it to help fund my graduate degree. However, my plans changed and I decided to not go to grad school, but to focus on starting my career. This was a great learning experience in learning business strategies, market research, creating relationships with customers and business partners and running a small business. In the first 4 months, I generated $13,000 in gross revenue. This paid for all of the expenses for the first year.

Wrote a research article describing a method for patterning carbon nanotubes on stainless steel that was accepted by the IDETC/CIE conference. I developed the method described in the article and developed an exposure time model for photolithography on stainless steel. To accomplish this I was trained for work in clean rooms using an E-beam and doing photolithography and I was also trained for imaging using an SEM.

I checked to make sure our machine shop kept up quality of parts, and I work to improve our processes and products. Made changes to the hammer and frame to reduce chances of misfires. Designed a fixture that reduced parts and operation time by 50%. Used SolidWorks to update prints and models. Used PC DMIS to check parts on a CMM.

Assisted Elevator mechanics maintain 100+ elevators on campus. I used problem solving strategies to discover malfunctions or other issues, then developed and planned how to repair the specific systems on the elevator.
