I am a Graduate Research Assistant planning to graduate in May of 2022 with a Master's degree in Materials and Geotechnical Engineering. It's been a great time over the past year and a half conducting my research. I've been able to design and run testing apparatuses for geosynthetic-based subgrade underneath flexible pavements. It is a lot of work and a lot of physical labor, but I can say that it'll pay off.

As a part of Alfred Benesch and Company, I was able to put together documents for proposals, letters of awards, geotechnical reports, and submittals. I finalized a culvert report after receiving data from the surveyors. I also utilized computer software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD. On these, I performed duties that covered airport runways, culvert analysis, and utility drawing sheets. I went on to survey a bit myself, assisting with staking for the Lincoln South Beltway, placing property corners, and establishing elevations for new houses. I was on-site to place hubs and guard where utility lines needed to go near Hallam, NE. I was able to witness a street being laid with concrete and noted how concrete trucks needed to be on and off the site in a relatively quick manner. I also took sight at sealant being poured into the joints. There were times where I assisted in making concrete cylinders and testing the air content.

I did survey work for Lamp Rynearson and I was able to go across the whole of Omaha to do several tasks. From the Missouri River Wastewater Treatment Plant to the "Street of Dreams", I was able to take full advantage of the Total Station and GPS Rover.I worked with Lamp in the Winter of 2017 and the Summer of 2018. In this way, it was possible to see both aspects of weather while being outdoors. This, I believe, gives a more well-rounded understanding of what the guys have to brave when they go out into the elements. For my part, I learned how to work the Total Station and how to calculate points and elevations. I also learned some technical terms. I am capable to handle a topography, run sewer lines, and I can find property corners with a magnetic locator. I also know how to keep log and information in a field book.

I worked closely with KPE Consulting Engineers. They deal with mechanical and structural engineering and are hired, at times, to handle legal suits and offer their advice on the matter of forensic engineering. With this company, I was able to do field runs and see buildings first-hand and understand the sites. We visited a roof which had hail damage and we also viewed a building for blind children. We looked at their HVAC and mechanical systems in the basement. I learned about piping, installation, and the valves within the system. We talked to people about the situation, thus communicating and working with the client in person and not just on the telephone. In the office, I was able to utilize Revit and preform several tasks for the company. I recreated buildings from old blueprints, copied drawings over from AutoCAD, and made different floor plans. I also presented my ideas in a meeting where they were discussed. In addition, I moved papers, cleared documents and asked the city for permits.
