Profile bio

About Daniel Steward

I’ve spent the last twenty years as a MacOS and iOS developer starting back in the good old days when you had to write retain release statements to manage memory in your Objective-C apps. I have gladly left those days behind and enjoy writing Swift and SwiftUI apps. These days I fill the role of lead iOS developer or sometimes architect working for companies like InRhythm. In a past life I was a biologist specializing in electron microscopy, ultra-microtomy and histo-biology working in the field of cataract research. I also spent a brief time as a high school science teacher before going back to the laboratory. In recent years I have scratched the biology itch by pursuing one of my favorite hobbies, gardening, with a high tech twist by applying aeroponic growing techniques to my vegetable garden. This has led me to build sensor networks and micro controllers for managing spray intervals. One of the most fascinating sensors is a leaf thickness sensor to provide data on when a plant needs to be spayed with water again. My entry into software development came when I took a job working at a company called Visible Productions creating 3D models of human anatomy. The tools we started with were very bad so, in self defense, I and another employee built a set of tools for tracing contours from a set of images and then triangulating them to get a model. When I look back on the last forty years I can honestly say that some of the most productive and worthwhile work I’ve done was as a scientist and educator. I find myself thinking that when I grow up I’d like to apply my considerable skills as a developer to science, ecology or education. Here’s some things that would be interesting to do: • Monitoring conditions around ocean coral reefs or some other ocean biology project. Sea turtles really fascinate me, maybe tracking sea turtles or other things. • I live in the mountains west of Boulder Colorado and spotting and reporting forest fires is an important day to day activity. It seems to me that writing an app for crowd sourcing data on fire location would be fun to do. • Working on large scale aeroponics would be fun. • I’ve always thought being a time machine repair man would be fun. • I have a mild, controllable case of type 2 diabetes. I talked my doctor into getting me a prescription for a FreeStyle Libre blood glucose monitor so I could “geek out” on better understanding what affects my blood sugar. The app for that is ok but could be a lot better for really tracking and analyzing blood sugar. That would be a fun app to work on.

Listed skills include Objective C, Swift, C++, Xcode, and 12 others.
