Everything changed for me when I learned how to properly use a semicolon. My life will never be the same; I cannot go back to ignorance.I began studying film in my freshman year of college. When I realized screenwriting was more fun than the filmmaking itself, I jumped ship. That year, I’d had so much fun discussing my peers’ written works with them that I gained an appetite for the editorial process. I essentially got my kicks from sitting down my friends and interrogating them on their written work, spooling through every detail of their prose until they wished they’d never asked for a “quick once-over” of their essay. You say you “don’t really know how to use a comma?" Welcome to my personal heaven—your personal hell. This will take an hour and a half.See, I’ve been a devoted writer since I could write, and my very first career choice - this was at the age of six or seven - was to be an author. I floundered around a bit after, and now I’m back to where I belong. The return journey was arduous, but now I’m physically in tears with the delight of realizing that my one true calling was right in front of me all along. How cliché!My hobby—my purpose is collaborating with others to make their work the best it can be. Whether this be overhauling an entire plotline or moving a single comma, I believe editing is the process of taking someone’s work and polishing it until it’s what they’d intended it to be all along. I’ve learned my lesson: I no longer steal my friends’ essays and return them completely rewritten.Take me on; this is what I live for.
