I am an international human rights lawyer, advocate and teacher who specializes in developing innovative legal instruments that can yield structural change to empower vulnerable communities.CAREER HIGHLIGHTS• Led bold anti-authoritarian litigation against Hungary • Led groundbreaking climate justice litigation to hold corporations responsible for human rights and environmental violations by their supply chain• Developed a “contextualized theory of rights” that I teach at Columbia University• Published a seminal book on affirmative action that was cited by Brazil’s Supreme Court in a ruling that led to the adoption of a Federal law that expanded affirmative action programs for Blacks at Brazilian Universities.My greatest learning and inspiration comes from grassroots leaders who have transcended so many obstacles with great courage -- from traditional communities in Mongolia fighting mining companies for water rights to Dalit sex workers in Nepal rising up against workplace violence to women in Kenya linking land rights to women’s rights.My career spans 20 years of strategic litigation, advocacy and capacity building for civil society organizations. I have defended human rights at the UN, in regional human rights systems and in courts around the world. I have also worked with communities to implement human rights rulings. I’m passionate about teaching human rights law and philosophy to people on the front lines. I have taught activists around the world from Argentina and Brazil to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Hungary to Cape Verde and Kenya to Mongolia and Nepal to Costa Rica and El Salvador.     Led bold anti-authoritarian litigation against Hungary over laws which criminalize and abusively tax the work of civil society groups under the pretext of controlling migration. This was the first case that OSF litigated against Hungary in its own name. Also worked on 10+ censorship cases involving bans on teaching about gender equality, LGBTQI groups, social justice and racial justice that went before the Brazilian Supreme Court. This censorship is part of Bolsonaro’s authoritarian strategy to undermine democracy now and for future generations. All Supreme Court decisions that have been delivered to date have upheld the protection of freedom of expression and pluralism in education.
