The Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) Urban Planning Initiative was an intergovernmental and nonprofit program meant to support planning for and mitigating the effects of climate change. Along of course with our work in China, it was among the American Planning Association’s first forays into international urban planning support. The Salt River Project (SRP) is a state electricity utility and a public water cooperative in Arizona. The purpose of the Washington, D.C. office was to lobby congress for support of laws and regulations beneficial to SRP. At SRP I analyzed and researched U.S. energy policy and prepared briefs for staff meetings with congress. I also wrote briefing books for utility and co-op executives to help them better understand new policies and laws.
Manager
After completing my Peace Corps service in September 2008 at the height of the economic downturn I worked as a restaurant manager outside of Washington, D.C. There I managed a staff of 50 employees, organized schedules, interpreted for Spanish speaking employees, and kept things running smoothly.
Peace Corps Volunteer
For two years I lived in a remote rural mountain village without electricity (other than whatever you can hook a car battery up to) in central Honduras. This means that the road to the city would wash out in the rainy season and sometimes the clouds would cover our valley and hush the world. Among my many projects, I collaborated with local organizations and stakeholders to build five biogas energy systems. I also measured and tested water sources for the municipality in collaboration with local villages’ leadership groups. All Peace Corps Volunteers, whether they are the first volunteer in a site or the tenth, are alone. We must learn to concurrently navigate a foreign language and culture while also working to start and maintain projects. As the first volunteer in my village, my job was to not only establish work for the following volunteers, but also introduce the idea of what a Peace Corps Volunteer can do.
Garden And Ecology Coordinator For An Ethnographic Study
For three years while still an undergraduate at MSU I participated in an ethnographic study of a low-income elementary school. There, I taught gardening, composting, and farming education while also learning how to garden, compost, and farm (I was a Philosophy major). I organized garden programs with the students, teachers, staff, volunteers, and the primary investigator. I also facilitated school fundraisers such as “Soup from our Stoop,” covered in local and national press. I wrote the "The pizza-Earth reunification" as chapter in the primary investigator's book, "The Pull of the Earth", about my experiences working at the school.
