    Using germ-free/gnotobiotic models I developed a method to capture and characterize the specificity of IgA producing cells from mice colonized with the model symbiont Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron. Using bidirectional gene expression profiling, we examined the impact of the specific IgA on host and microbial gene expression. We discover that IgA could modulate both the bacterial expression of the target as well as modulate the host inflammatory response to the symbiotic bacteria. These results support the critical role for symbiont specific IgA in modulating the microbiome and supporting homeostasis in the gut.
