I have many years of experience as a leader, both in and out of the field of education. I've lived throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. I have been a coach, teacher, principal, and superintendent in both public and private schools in California and internationally over a 25-year span. Before that, I served in the United States Air Force from 1987, attaining the rank of Captain while being stationed throughout the Middle East and Europe.I am passionate about serving students and families with a caring and compassionate approach to education while also striving for academic excellence. I'm readily available to students and parents to discuss their interests, concerns and hopes. I care deeply for my students and my schools, and sees my work as a long-term investment in the lives of those in my care.The purpose of education is to prepare students to not only survive, but to thrive in an ever-changing present and an unknown future. We must provide tools, not just knowledge, for students to interpret information and adapt to their environment – and have a hand in shaping their environment. We are preparing our young people for the world of the future, not just the world we inhabit. They need critical thinking skills, strong communication skills, and the ability and desire to continue learning throughout their lifetimes. Education must address what I have used in past schools as ‘head, heart and hands’ to build academic knowledge, positive character traits, and a desire to act in improving self and serving others.Fostering these attributes means that teachers are coaches, mentors and supports that come alongside students to develop innate abilities, characteristics and styles in a safe and nurturing environment. Each child is uniquely gifted and brings talents that should be encouraged. Teachers model life-long learning which keeps the classroom environment fresh and lively as they point the way for student success.Curriculum should include connections to real life wherever possible. Problem based learning, applications to current events, travel, exposure to different ideas, collaborative problem solving, and teamwork are critical. Students are active learners, interacting with the curriculum and taking ownership; teachers point the way and supply the needed tools and knowledge for students to achieve.
