Resuming my independent practice, I am now positioning myself as a thought leader in the telecom industry, drawing on decades of technical and strategic experience to offer candid insights into where the industry is and is going. Strategy Analytics was acquired by TechInsights in the summer of 2022. Continued as a subject matter expert on the telecom value chain, from chips to modules to equipment to services to consumers. Wrote long-form and short reports on technology advances, strategy, competition, and state-of-the-industry. Wrote custom reports and white papers for leading equipment vendors. Responded with detailed analysis to vendor and network operator customer inquiries on a range of strategic and competitive topics. Spoke at industry conferences. Acted as subject matter expert to analysts covering adjacent spaces and in sales engagements.

Research and client services in the Fiber-to-the-x, 5G fixed wireless, optical networks, non-public mobile networks and edge computing markets, from both the service provider and vendor perspectives.

Brought in as FTTH expert by consulting team developing a broadband feasibility study and business plan for a Communication Union District (a regional broadband development entity) representing 18 Vermont towns. Created detailed capital cost model based on contractor and vendor pricing. Evaluated technology options and recommended solution for outside plant architecture, based on cost, risk and labor market conditions. Collaborated on 10-year cash flow model and business plan. Helped with short-term fixed wireless extensions to customers not economically reachable with fiber. Team demonstrated financial and technical feasibility for serving almost all residences in the District with fiber for a majority of locations, filled in with fixed wireless. Report was accepted by Vermont Department of Public Service and ultimately led to a successful deployment, providing high-speed Internet services to 27,000 households in 20 towns with 1300 miles of fiber, by 2026.

Heavy Reading is one of the leading providers of market research and competitive analysis for telecom service providers and vendors. As an independent contributing analyst, I write reports, white papers and blog posts, moderate Light Reading webinars, and research evolving fiber-based broadband access vertical markets and technologies.

Start-up in the Smart Grid networking and network security space. Activities included business plan development, product definition, technology requirements, grant writing. Technology areas include: cyber-security for electric utilities (CIPS), precision timing protocol (IEEE 1588), synchrophasors, microgrids, sensors.

(2004-2009) Technical lead and program manager, Next Generation Optical Access Network Research. Created and drove vision, strategy and research agenda in support of Motorola’s optical access networks business unit. Established technical focus on extended reach Gbit/s passive optical networks (GPONs) and 10 Gbit/s PONs. Led a team in architecture and prototype development including an all-optical GPON reach extender, 10/2.5Gbit/s PON and wavelength agile PON. Built internal and external partnerships, and created thought leadership through standards, publications and customer interaction. (2003-2004) Chief networking architect and member of core team for an ultrawideband wireless mesh home network. (2002-2003) Program manager and acting product manager for exploratory work toward millimeter wave, point-to-point, line-of-sight wireless drop (distribution plant to customer). Led a small team through requirements, feasibility and high level design and performed competitive analysis, factory cost modeling, and preliminary business case development.(1994-2003) Internal consulting role, with concurrent involvement in multiple projects and exploratory activities. Areas of technical focus included IP, Quality-of-Service, ATM, home networking, cable, FTTx, DSL, and wireless infrastructure. (1988-93) Principal Staff Engineer. Developed network architecture for a pioneering cell switched networking system. (1987-89) Senior Staff Engineer Technical co-leader of a group developing reusable ISDN Call Control Signaling Software in C. (1986-87) Principal SW Engineer Responsible for ISDN call control software telephone terminal adaption software in C, and ISDN standardization.(1981-86) Senior SW Engineer Led design and development of an X.25 gateway in C and 68000 assembler. Contributed to related standards.
