I assisted attorneys and staff members of OCSE in preparing the upcoming edition of OCSE's Child Support Handbook for attorneys. My primary responsibilities included performing research on topics requested by attorneys, including locating recent case law, and Bluebook-ing the drafts of chapters prepared for the handbook.

The central purpose of the Alabama Law Institute is to aid the Alabama legislature in revising and updating current law and occasionally enacting new statutes and constitutional amendments. My primary responsibility was to research issues that the directors of the Law Institute were asked to present to legislative committees for consideration. Consequently, I spent a large portion of my time investigating laws of other states on narrow issues and comparing them to Alabama law. To this end, I prepared fifty-state surveys on issues such as alternative child testimony, individual rights to education, and open meetings laws.I also performed tasks related to other functions of the Law Institute. I spent a significant portion of my time updating a case summaries handbook to be distributed to the probate judges of Alabama, in order to keep them advised of all recent developments within the purview of the probate court. I did the same with handbooks for Alabama sheriffs and summarizing Alabama's bid law. I also prepared summaries of several recently enacted state laws, such as the Alabama Accountability Act (failing schools) and the Beason-Hammon Alabama Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act (immigration), to be presented by the directors of the Law Institute at CLE seminars.

I researched issues and answered questions for attorneys in a very wide range of areas, such as bankruptcy, estate planning, general civil litigation, condominium law, landlord/tenant disputes, family law, business formation, and debt collection. Usually, I put my findings in writing and physically presented them to the attorneys so we could discuss my research and any outstanding issues.I also spent a significant amount of time assisting attorneys with various projects they had volunteered to take on, such as writing an article for a bar journal or editing a chapter of a practice guide or other secondary source. My assignments typically involved searching for available sources or checking already-cited material to ensure that it continues to be accurate. Occasionally I also drafted proposed changes to potentially be included in the final product.

My primary responsibility while volunteering for Judge Thompson was to analyze each motion filed with the court, verify the sources cited in the motion, and determine the substantive law applicable to each situation. Particularly when dealing with civil motions, I would then take my findings to Judge Thompson and discuss them with him to ensure that he was as prepared as possible to resolve the motions. Often, I was able to draft orders to resolve these motions.I also assisted Judge Thompson and his judicial assistant with various administrative tasks, such as setting a criminal docket for arraignment and reviewing conditional bond forfeitures to determine if the forfeiture should be revoked or become final. I became very familiar with the filing systems used for civil, criminal, and domestic cases through these responsibilities.
