Jane Reusch, M.D., Lab (Bioengineering):Analyzing MRIs of the heart and aorta of people enrolled in a clinical study on the effects of obesity and complication-free type 2 diabetes on cardiovascular structure and function. Cardiovascular health reevaluated with MRI and other biomarkers after a 3 month regimented exercise intervention.Measures collected include left ventricle volume, strain, and wall thickness as well as aortic distensibility and pulse wave velocity (PWV) via several methods to measure arterial stiffness. Training a convolutional neural network (CNN) using Python and deep learning to perform segmentation of 4D-Flow MRI for acquiring PWV of the aorta as well as anatomy of the pulmonary artery.Software used: Circle Cardiovascular Imaging (cvi42), ImageJ, RadiAnt, and 3D Slicer for image processing. Prism for statistics and graphing. MatLab used for both.

Richard Benninger, PhD, Lab (Bioengineering):I designed and tested the effects of mimetic peptides on cell to cell connectivity in the Islets of Langerhans, harvested from mouse pancreas. It was measured using fluorescence microscopy, specifically calcium imaging and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP). Then data analysis was performed using MatLab. Helped maintain a colony of mice using in research and was responsible for the autoclaving of lab equipment.
