I look after a team of GIS Analysts and Marine Data Specialists. I am in charge of the MMO's GIS strategy and currently leading on a project to redesign the GIS architecture and improve the provision of GIS to the rest of the organisation. This includes defining and increasing my team's capabilities, working closely with ESRI to look at emerging technologies, reviewing our GIS infrastructure and providing access to simple tools, apps, dashboards and data visualisations. This will make GIS accessible and usable by all staff to improve decision making and make better use of our data across the entire business, including feeding vital analysis into EU exit work.I work with senior staff across the organisation and other DEFRA groups to feed into the IT strategy for the group and ensure that the right technology is available to the right staff whilst sticking to tight budgets.I liaise with IBM on the provision of our data, metadata and GIS servers, and support the GIS analysts who maintain our data services as part of their BAU.I also sit on the DEFRA GIS board where we are currently defining and working towards a joint vision of how GIS should be used within DEFRA, promoting and encouraging cross group collaboration where possible.

With the rapid advance of GI technology, the Ordnance Survey has to keep at the forefront of technology, skills and techniques. I’ve been brought in as a GI technical specialist, within the Cartography team, to help lead this change.Part of the role is to find quick fixes and implement automation within the existing GIS environments in all areas within Cartography, mainly working with ArcGIS. This can be anything from the implementation of automation through custom python tools and model builder, changing the workflows to increase efficiency, or training the staff to make better use of the available resources.I am also on hand to advice and influence the management staff within the various product sections in Cartography and in the wider business on best practices and how to move forward with GI technology.Within the 1:50,000 team, I am co-leading a project to migrate the production systems of the famous OS Landranger paper products to a more modern system. With a semi-agile management style to the system trials and goals.I am in charge of the creation and management of an ArcGIS cluster site, providing various basemap services to the productiona reas.Within the 1:10,000 team, using ArcGIS Model Builder and FME, I have automated geometry checking and the auto-correction of tile edge matching issues. A new automatic geometry checking routine has been added to the weekly workflows which now drives the cartographers directly to the error locations rather than to the polygon with the error. This has led to substantial time savings and improved data quality.Within the Cartography Development team, I am leading regular technical training sessions to improve the skill and capacity of the team to support the rest of the Cartography department.On an ad-hoc basis, I am called upon by other areas of the business to consult on their technical and training needs and to advise them on where GI could be used to improve their processes.

Working within the GIS team at the GeoData Institute, I provided GIS support for many spatial data management and analysis projects in multiple disciplines, coordinated GeoData’s CPD (continued professional development) courses, was highly involved in the delivery and development of these CPD courses and I provided remote GIS support for multiple clients.My time at GeoData allowed me to become very experienced at data capture, spatial data management, processing and analysis, quality assurance and the production of GIS based mapping products. I also became very experienced in providing GIS support and training, both in a desk-side environment and remotely, mostly using the ArcGIS package, but I also gained industry experience in MapInfo and Quantum GIS.In my role as a GIS trainer, I delivered introductory courses in ArcGIS and Quantum GIS, and advanced courses in ArcGIS. I was also heavily involved in the delivery of bespoke training courses tailored to the client's needs. This allowed me to travel all over the UK and as far as Moldova to deliver a bespoke 4 day course in Quantum GIS to perinatal health professionals.

Whilst working for the GeoData Institute, I spent 3 months on a secondment working 3 days a week for RWE Npower Renewables, in both on-shore and off-shore wind power. This was to cover an empty vacancy during some internal staff movements. In this role I managed the GIS databases, provided day to day GIS support, produced maps and captured new data on demand and to tight deadlines. I also carried out data analysis using the spatial analyst extension for ArcGIS in order to analyse wind speeds and wind direction in areas of interest in order to determine best turbine placement. The last week in this role was spent providing desk-side coaching to the new GI Specialist who had been re-deployed to permanently fill this vacancy.

I was part of a team co-ordinating access to map files for OS and Land Registry’s field surveyors. I was also supporting a team who co-ordinated the flying routes for external image suppliers, providing them with relevant pre-flight data.I later joined the imagery team, testing the quality of aerial imagery using a mixture of visual and computer generated checks. I carried out video audits related to the update of MasterMap and ITN layers around the country. The majority of work was carried out in Excel, Word, Access, MapInfo, GMS2, DCQTCS and a number of imagery display programmes.
