Designing the right products, making them the right way

Working with an early-stage start-up to bring a range of consumer electronics to launch, and help to define and develop a short and mid-term product roadmap.

An additional role to support a critical pivot in the business as Beryl moved to become an independent bikeshare operator. This involved the creation of all hardware and product requirements to support the development, deployment and maintenance of an 1,500 bike scheme, launched in Bournemouth during 2019.

Beryl (formerly Blaze) was founded to make urban cycling safer and get more people on bikes. Building upon the patented laser technology launched in the flagship product, the Laserlight, I helped Beryl to become a category leader and driving force in UK cycling. I led the R&D and NPD teams during a three year period of growth that saw the company evolve far beyond a lighting manufacturer and into a credible, world-class mobility operator. Beyond their own fleet of fully-integrated smart bikes, Beryl’s patented laser technology and lighting features on over 13,000 hire bikes currently in service in schemes across London, New York, Toronto and Glasgow.

Supporting the Design for Manufacture module across first and second year students. As a visiting lecturer I have presented talks around design for manufacturer and the importance of simplicity and semantics in designing tools. I have also briefed first year students on collaborative projects run in conjunction with Joseph Joseph; most recently challenging students to transpose brand values and design methodology into new applications and areas within the domestic realm.

Responsible for the growth, direction and design output of the kitchen gadget category; raising the level of innovation and usefulness beyond the competition across all new launches.

Providing concept design and product development support for a range of clients and sectors. Based in Designit's London office, working in a client-facing position alongside the in-house design team to provide ad-hoc and freelance support across a range of both short and long-term projects.

Freelance support across a range of confidential medical and human-factor projects, spanning concept development through to manufacturing surface data.

V2 Studios is an award-winning product design agency based in East London, founded by brothers Chris & Andy Vernall in 2013. V2 Studios work with some of the worlds leading brands, manufacturers and innovators to create disruptive, game-changing products and concepts that are amongst the most commercially successful in their categories. Working across diverse categories such as transport, consumer electronics, toys and education, domestic products and lifestyle, V2 Studios provides a boutique service tailored to the specific needs of the client. Services ranged from concept generation & ideation, category strategy supporting an existing in-house design resource, or a full co-design service to take products into manufacture. Clients included Nokia, Panasonic, LG, Philips, Hasbro, Tomy & TomTom.

Glen Dimplex is one of the world's largest manufacturers of electric heating and domestic appliances, and a leader in renewable energy solutions. Glen Dimplex Design operates as an 'in-house' design consultancy, supporting R&D, strategy and production functions across leading brands such as Morphy Richards, Dimplex, Stoves and Britannia Range Cooking.

Freelance Industrial & Interaction Design, primarily working on an in-car Satellite Navigation Unit. Assisted in project managing a UI development project, as well as generating the required screens and imagery to populate the unit. Used Flash and wire framing techniques extensively in evaluating and testing the GUI prior to handover to a third-party software partner.
