Working under the supervision of Prof. David M. Haddleton This involved working in a research laboratory synthesising novel, water-soluble polymers for industrial applications. As part of this work I had to liaise with industrial partners (BASF), set-up meetings, adapt my work to the needs of the company, and undertake a three-month internship. This enabled me to develop a strong idea of the business ethos, and helped me to understand what is expected of those who work in industry. In addition to the above I was involved in maintaining and managing analytical equipment, providing assistance to younger PhD students, keeping an up-to-date record of my experiments and data, be creative with problem-solving, and developing of new ideas. Finally, I attended a variety of national and international conferences to present my work, and networked with people working in Polymer Chemistry.

This involved the supervision of first year undergraduate students during organic chemistry laboratory work. As part of this role I had to teach up to 12 students organic synthesis, per week, mark their lab scripts, be responsible for their health and safety, and provide constructive feedback. I also had to work with academic supervisors and laboratory technicians in the discussion of mark schemes, protocol and equipment. Working as an undergraduate laboratory demonstrator strengthened my knowledge of what is expected of students at a degree level.
