I run the germplasm curation program at Monsanto. Some of my responsibilities as part of that job include maintaining suplly of older inbred corn lines from both internal and external groups. Provide high quality seed to internal groups as requested throughout the company and the world. I also work with other teams around the world to implement cold room organization ideas and enable those groups to fully utilize IT tools available for inventory management. I provide feedback from these groups to the software developers in order to improve the IT tools. I am currently working towards being a certified LEAN practitioner and am leading an Inventory Management LEAN event.

I support the activities of the Central Region for Corn Breeding. This includes special projects best handled centrally, including gathering pipeline statistics, managing nurseries at a central location, assisting with the management of isolated crossing blocks located around this location. Additionally I curate the data and manage a database of corn inbreds and hybrids, adding information according to needs. For this database I also photograph corn inbred lines for the users of this tool to use in the future.

In this position my main project was to develop an SSR library for oat. I used restriction enzymes to cut the DNA and then added repeat oligos attached to magnetic beads to find pieces of DNA that contained those repeats. Then cloned that DNA, had it printed on a membrane and using phospho-illuminescence screened the colonies for those repeats. The positive colonies were sequenced and primers were developed around those repeat sections. Those primers were used in PCR to screen the two parents of the mapping population used widely in oat to find markers polymorphic in that population. Additionally I worked on a project looking at expression levels of RNA in a set of experiments using virus induced gene silencing (VIGS) utilizing q-RT-PCR.In the beginning of 2008 I was promoted to lab manager. In this position I continued working on my main project and I ordered all the supplies for the lab and managed the day to day tasks for the undergraduate assistants in the lab.I was also in charge of writing SOP's and safety complaince within the lab both with regards to radio isotope use and general safety. This included maintaining the MSDS sheets and testing the shower and eye wash stations.
