I am not the person you want on your Pictionary team. But I am someone who can draw up (and execute) some pretty fantastic programs. In 2017, I knew I needed to create my own role in addressing climate change. Thanks to Project Drawdown, I was able to zero in on food waste reduction. But where to start? Taking inspiration from Feeding the 5000, Make Food Not Waste started as a free party in Detroit in 2018, open to the public, to get people excited about food waste reduction. 2500 people enjoyed 5-star meals made from food that would otherwise go to waste. In 2019, it was 3500 people. When COVID hit, we changed course and made 5000 to-go Thanksgiving meals. Then came the kitchens, the training for food service operations, the technical advising, and partnerships. Five years in, Make Food Not Waste is a driving force for food waste reduction in Michigan and we're having more and more impact every year. Each day brings an opportunity to draw the next program for.the organization. If you would like to be part of it, or talk about food waste (my fave topic!), reach out here or at danielle@makefoodnotwaste.org.
