Danielle Vonlembke work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Data Science / Software Engineer Intern
Researched the correlation between lobster fishing in Maine and the decline in the North Atlantic Right Whale (NARW) population. Used python to compile NARW datasets, create maps, and to analyze the correlation using machine learning and packages such as Pandas, GeoPandas, and Random Forest. Used Kibana and Elasticsearch to visualize Vessel AIS and NARW data. Had the opportunity to travel to Virginia, and work with a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) to locate peaks in an area of interest and create polygons around them for risk mapping.
Student Trainee (Physical Science)
Created the following vegetation product maps in ArcGIS: Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR) for Sentinel 2 and Landsat 8 imagery. The maps were created by using the raster calculator in the geoprocessing tools and raw bands of the data products. The rasters were then changed to points and summarized in pre determined basins. The goal of this project was to understand vegetation growth after a fire by comparing the vegetation rasters post-fire and a year later. I created timeseries plots in python for all vegetation products and satellite products. To compare the two satellite products, I also created linear regression plots in python. After getting a deeper understanding of the satellites and timeseries, the results were used to help evaluate the risk of debris flows one year and two years after the fire.
Lunar And Planetary Institute Intern
Worked at the Lunar and Planetary Institute. Developed numerical models of stresses and deformation of volcanic systems for purposes of providing versatile tools to increase the understanding of physical processes affecting volcanoes, such as magma transport, surface faulting, and magma chamber stability. In this project, I used the COMSOL Multiphysics software to test 2D axisymmetric finite element models (FEMs) of a pressurized elliptical magma chamber to study: 1- the stability and the type of failure of the chamber, and 2- the formation of circumferential fractures at the surface, with application to Sapas Mons. I used the computed stress states to predict the locations and orientations of fractures, and then compared these to the observed distribution of fractures on Sapas Mons, in order to constrain the set of conditions (including chamber size and depth, and overpressure) that produced the fractures. It was my responsibility to explore the parameter space of the problem and to analyze the results in their geologic context using a major commercial FEM software package. I improved my technical writing skills when writing an abstract on my work. I submitted the abstract and had a poster presentation at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference.
