"The new video for 77-76 is about history repeating itself. We felt compelled to make a video that matched what this song is about - the alarming political shift in the past few years where we seem to be revisiting debates on subjects that at one point we appeared to be moving past (fascism, xenophobia, immigrant rights).We teamed up with director Danielle Davis who juxtaposed images of protests from the past and the present to explore an unsettling feeling - the one you get when you see the same signs held in the air, in the same spaces, decades apart. This asks the question: have we gotten anywhere? Or as a sign seen at many protests this year would put it: “I can’t believe I’m still protesting this shit.”Using NYC as the backdrop, Danielle sifted through a massive video archive of protests in the city and edited together a compelling and moving visual document of the unending battle that progressive forces have waged over the last century for equality and justice. In the first half of the video, all present-day footage is presented alongside archival footage in black-and-white, making it frighteningly difficult to distinguish between time periods. The only colour that peeks through is red from the stomach-churning Charlottesville demonstrations.We are fortunate that there are so many incredibly brave and determined individuals who refuse to put up with the insanity and we wanted to pay homage to that history in this video. There’s a lyric in the song, "Stand Up, It’s all on You" that is a call to those of us with privilege who often have the least to lose.
