This volunteer internship position was within the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Division of Land Use. Working with senior environmental specialists, I performed duties such as pre-reviewing applications, analyzing blueprints, site inspections and writing approval/rejection letters. I used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) regularly to identify threatened and endangered species, classify nearby waterways, and to identify potential problems before an permit application was accepted for review. I was eventually able to review applications under the Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act Rules and the Flood Hazard Area Control Act Rules and conduct site inspections.
