Summer Undergraduate Research Grant Recipient

Providence, Rhode Island Area

Working with faculty mentor Jeff Johnson, Ph.D., I was responsible for researching those deported on the U.S.S. Buford, in December of 1919. After finding lists of those deported, I was able to find transcripts and documents detailing the wives and children forced into poverty as a result of the deportations, and, in writing our research article entitled "In the Wake of the Buford: Paranoia, the Red Scare, and Family Separation in the Progressive Era,” I was able to share the stories of those families. Through weekly meetings with Dr. Johnson, we were able to craft this article in July 2019, and share a timely example of family separation and civil inequality in American History. The 10-week grant resulted in 6 weeks of research and 4 weeks of writing

Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative Summer Research Fellow

As part of a group of 8 students under the supervision of 4 faculty mentors, we were responsible for conducting scholarly analyses of 16 anti-poverty proposals published by the Russell Sage Foundation in early 2018. Personally responsible for evaluating 4 of these proposals, which included such ideas as a National Subsidized Employment Proposal and a Universal Child Allowance, we were tasked with examining how each of these proposals might work to combat the extreme poverty of Rochester's EMMA Beachwood Neighborhood. At the end of the summer, we presented our analyses to Dr. Leonard Brock, director of the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative, and explained how, in our estimation, the anti-poverty initiatives we read about might be effective or ineffective in the Greater Rochester Area.
