About Daniel Shindler

I currently work as a Leading Library Assistant at the prestigious British Library. I am in charge of managing issue and return of books and specialized manuscripts between the shelves and the end user. I have to apply attention to detail and use the shelfmark to ensure that the correct book or other item is transported to and from the shelves. I interact directly with customers and am able to make use of previous experience I had working at a railway station to ensure that I provide an excellent customer experience.I recently worked as an asset officer at Mattereum.(Industries Ltd). Here I was involved in the creation of Asset Passports, documents linked to physical assets represented by Non-Fungible Tokens which were digital tokens representing the items in question. I populated JSON files with information received from customers to create the passports and negotiate with clients to obtain the required information. I previously also worked for a some time as a library assistant at the Royal Society of Medicine. Here I was involved in document delivery. This required clear communication with team members in line with established procedures. I used a scanner to convert journal articles into digital form for dispatching by email and printed digital articles for postal delivery I recorded all details of requests on the Library Management Software Microsoft Dynamics. In addition, I had to make sure that everything was carried out in-line with copyright regulations and GDPR. My role also included working front-of-house.I was awarded an MSc with Merit in Library Science from City University of London in 2018. My master’s degree has made me aware of the major contemporary issues affecting libraries, and has also fine-tuned my analytical and writing skills, which I had already developed through my first degree, which was a BSc (Hons) in Biosciences. I have a total of four and a half years of customer service experience in a number of positions, including at a railway station, which required the development of skills in dealing with difficult customers. I also taught for several years, teaching martial arts to classes of forty children or teenagers. Here I was under constant pressure to deal with competing demands coming from children of varying technical ability to maintain discipline, whilst also managing a team of teenage assistant instructors (peer tutors).

Listed skills include Microsoft Office, Customer Service, Research, Microsoft Excel, and 30 others.

Leading Library Assistant

Current

Issuing and return of books. Retrieving items from the basement, dealing with all elements of the circulation processing chain. Using barcodes to track progress of items through the chain, starting with retrieval from shelves, through to delivery to library users and return to storage. Some of the items are rare and fragile. They require careful handling and must be issued to and used by readers in accordance with library regulations. Caution is also required in transport of such materials to and from storage and loose-leaf materials are placed in special plastic folders to protect them. Such material may also have to be weighed before and after use. We aim to ensure that all users of the materials do so in a manner which is fair, appropriate and ethical, and we must ensure that all material which has been issued is returned correctly by users. The protection of the collection is our first priority, as users of the British Library are not direct customers of the organisation, although of course we still strive to provide a friendly and efficient service. When accessing the collection we have to operate library equipment such as trolleys and moveable shelving.

Asset Officer

I was involved in the creation of Mattereum Asset Passports, HTML documents showing information about specific physical assets held by individuals and linked to Non-Fungible Tokens, which are a form of digital token tied to and representing a real-world physical asset. I created JSON template files which contain the information received from the client and communicated with clients to obtain information needed for the passport and to explain processes to them. I also worked with art storage facilities to help clients find suitable locations to store the physical assets. I worked with image files such as PNGs as JPEGs to help provide evidence for the warranties outlined in the passport.

Archive Researcher

London, United Kingdom

I was involved in the extraction of data from archival records. The project in question related to the history of the East London Print Industry. I carried out most of my work at the London Metropolitan Archives. It was my responsibility to locate suitable items in the archival database, and then examine them to discover their salient features, before noting these down for submission to the project's online forum after leaving the archive. I have dealt with a number of document types, including photographs, delicate parchments, and other written material. I often had to decipher handwriting styles which were not easy to read. As well as showing that I was able to interpret these documents. this work also indicated that I was able to handle items with care.

Library Assistant

London, United Kingdom

I worked front-of-house here and was involved in all the activities necessary for the successful operation of the library. I managed the bibliographic records, was involved in lending, return and renewal of books and also ensured that books were correctly arranged on the shelves. I took an active part in this, using my initiative to manage these library tasks and complete them during less busy periods. This role has given me the opportunity to put into practise my excellent interpersonal skills, and I appied these in a range of ways, from making polite conversation with patrons to issuing fines where necessary. I have learnt to adapt a manner which allows for a comfortable rapport with customers. However, I can still be assertive when this is in the interests of the organisation, such as ensuring items are returned appropriately. This role also involved teamwork so I would be well-suited to working alongside colleagues in an organisation.

Apr 2017 - Oct 2017

Performance Improvement Ambassador

Penge East Railway Station

I provided customer service at a railway station. Here I was required to interact effectively with customers to provide directions and other advice. I became an expert at dealing with customers who were unhappy and many was often able to defuse the situation. Their irritation was not due to any fault of mine but generally due to late or cancelled trains. I was required to communicate in a clear and polite manner with large numbers of customers, often providing announcements over the station speakers. Sometimes we had to deal with depressed or anxious customers and thus we also worked in an informal suicide prevention role. Another part of our role for the first few months involved recording train arrival and departure times, as well as reasons why the train did not leave the platform on time. This required accuracy and precision as we had to record train times to the second and we also had to monitor large numbers of customers disembarking from trains. I was also involved in resolving an emergency situation in which a customer sprained their ankle badly by stepping into the gap between the train and the platform. We were in no way responsible for this which was an unfortunate error on his part. I handled the situation well and was able to communicate calmly and effectively with the emergency services. i stayed for an hour after the end of my shift to ensure the customer's welfare. I was also involved in a cleaning role at the station.
