I'm an editor/reporter for our Live team, focused on major breaking news. I am based in NYC after living in London for 2.5 years and in Hong Kong for two years. I spent seven years as a reporter for our Express Team, which is focused on breaking news, explainers, quick-turnaround features and other stories that are written with our digital audience in mind. I had no specific beat, with my work spread across every desk in the newsroom. Previously, I watched the world for developing or otherwise fascinating stories and presented them, in brief, in the Watching module that appeared on the right side of the nytimes.com home page.Before that, I worked on the social media desk for 2+ years. I spent one day per week running the @nytimes Twitter account, and the other four days working on social strategy, training and reader-assisted reporting with the Metro, Sports and Business desks. "Reader-assisted reporting" is way too buzzwordy, so I'll define: Anything that invited NYT readers into our reporting or storytelling, including searching for sources, collecting reader experiences/information or prompting reader creativity.

I directed crowdsourcing and social media efforts. Favorite initiatives included Free The Files, a crowdsourcing project to gather political ad data at local TV stations, and the ProPublica Patient Harm Community, a Facebook group based on an in-progress investigation. Duties included running social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Google+), hiring then managing a social media producer, exploring new tools and technologies, newsroom training, and investigation-specific social media projects.

Created the editorial concept, edited reporters and managed social media for a "hyperlocal" project with the Philadelphia Inquirer. Also trained Inquirer journalists in social media, managed some Philly.com partnerships and wrote some stories for the Inquirer. I know you're wondering, so I'll mention "community builder" was a title we invented because we didn't want to tell people I was working on what was initially a secret project. Yes, I am aware it sounds a little ridiculous in hindsight.

Connected real people to the news process as part of the Community Engagement team. Job responsibilities included leading crowdsourcing projects, recruiting and maintaining a network of 200+ local blogs, traditional reporting, on-air appearances for TBD's TV channel, occasionally running TBD's social media accounts, producing the sports front, editing sports columnists, aggregating blog posts from the network, and pretty much whatever else was needed.

I covered local government, education, cops and courts, state politics, business, and all sorts of various features in every section. -- Lead writer on the Obama campaign in Pennsylvania.-- One of the original guinea pigs in Jay Rosen and David Cohn's beatblogging.org project. I experimented in using a small social network, powered by Ning, to aid my reporting of the Hershey area.-- Started Central PA NewsVote, a blog that solicited story ideas in the comments, gathered them into poll form, and let readers vote on which story they'd like to assign me.

I was a stringer for 3+ years while attending Penn State, then became a part-time staff writer while taking classes during senior year.-- Regularly contributed news and features to Blue, a student-centered publication-- Wrote a sports-themed column for Blue-- Wrote a Penn State football-themed blog for centredaily.com, one of the first blogs on the site.

-- Worked on Public Life team for six weeks, covering city and county government-- Worked on Crime and Safety team for six weeks, on the day cops shift-- Was part of the team to cover the trial and aftermath of BTK, the city's infamous serial killer-- I also chased tornadoes.
