History Teacher
CurrentThroughout the past year, working at Unity Preparatory Charter school, I have worked in four different domains. I worked as a sixth grade history teacher, a reading interventionist, and as a member of the sixth grade Support Services team.In my work in the history classroom, I worked as the ICT teacher that worked to differentiate lessons and work in small groups with specific students that needed extra support to complete their classwork. I also work with my co-teacher to create new curriculum, from Columbus through the U.S. Constitution, that was culturally relevant, was multi-modal, and used a significant amount of primary source materials. In this capacity, I was responsible for grading classwork and assignments, and logging it daily. My work as a reading interventionist involved teaching multiple small groups of students, grades 6-8, that needed extra reading support to get their skills to grade level. Fountas and Pinnell is the reading system that I used in these small groups. Using this program, I was able to help students improve both their reading accuracy and comprehension of a text. In addition, I was able to daily reinforce reading a writing mechanics, such as adding prefixes and suffixes, identifying long versus short vowel sounds, and breaking words into syllables. Each trimester each of my students was able to grow at least one grade level closer to their goal. As a member of the Support Services team, I was responsible for meeting weekly with the other ICT teachers from different classes, as well as the administration, in order to discuss how to most effectively meet the needs of students with IEPs and other students with extra needs. In addition to these meetings, I was required to frequently assemble IEP drafts for students before their yearly IEP meetings, as well as attend the meetings as one of the representatives from the school to advise on any changes to the existing legal mandates.
