I retired on June 30, 2020, from the Veterans Administration after 11 years as a project manager in clinical research, including being involved with the VA’s developing efforts in COVID-19 studies.At the VA’s Cooperative Studies Program (CSP), I was a project manager involved in 10 studies focusing on improving the healthcare of U.S. Veterans and, by extension, all Americans. Responsibilities included working one-on-one with researchers and other VA healthcare professionals in the planning and conduct of these studies, including communications among all parties, and tracking and managing budgets.At the VA’s Clinical Science Research and Development (CSRD) section, I managed three centralized Data Monitoring Committees (DMCs). Membership of these committees consists of VA researchers and biostatisticians. The DMCs monitor efficacy, safety and performance of several dozen clinical trials, including communication between CSRD headquarters, DMC members and study investigators. In spring 2020, I was tasked by program leadership in Washington, DC, to form a new COVID-19 DMC to monitor VA studies in this area. I recruited a group of experts in epidemiology, infectious diseases, pulmonology, critical care, public health and biostatistics to become members of this DMC.I received an incentive award from CSRD for my work in forming the COVID-19 DMC. In addition, I am a Certified Veterans Health Administration Lean Healthcare Yellow Belt. Also during my time at the VA, I was heavily involved for 10 years in the planning, writing and editing of the CSP program’s quarterly newsletter. The CSP Newsletter grew to up to 19 pages per issue during this time. The last issue on which I worked, June 2020, focused on CSP’s and CSRD’s entry into COVID-19 research.My earlier experience in writing, editing and managing multiple projects simultaneously transferred effectively to the project manager role at the VA (see attached resume).

Position created for me when most of Ad Age's editor jobs were moved from Chicago to New York, and I declined to make the move. Involved in editing about 40 special sections annually. In project manager role, directly planned and oversaw editorial content for about half these sections, with themes such as magazines, TV, digital media, sports marketing, marketing to kids, prominent women in marketing and prominent young adults in marketing; many of these sections were linked to sponsored events. Took these sections through entire process from planning to final product. Assigned stories, editing, rewrite. Also wrote stories for these sections. In addition to running in the flagship publication, many of the sections were featured prominently on AdAge.com.

During this early era of the Internet, I was editing a daily page of news that was faxed to subscribers; suggested that person editing fax report should also edit news for Ad Age Web site, leading to creation of daily news editor title. Edited and posted news items on Ad Age site. Added these duties to previous responsibilities as news editor. Wrote "Adages" column for more than two years during this period.

One of top editors producing weekly edition of Ad Age. Worked closely with other editors and reporters in planning magazine. Editing, rewrite, copy editing, headline and caption writing, proofreading. Wrote some features.

Supervised copy desk and totally restaffed operation after all other copy editors either left or transferred to other jobs in a period of a few weeks. Worked closely with Ad Age's top editors in planning each week's edition. Copy editting, headline and caption writing, proofreading.

Joined Ad Age, flagship publication of Crain Communications, at time of expansion from weekly to twice-weekly frequency. Copy editing, headline and caption writing, proofreading. Assignments included compiling and editing late-breaking news briefs, at that time the most-read feature in Ad Age.

Joined this publication, which covers the hospital business, at a crucial growth period for the magazine, soon after it was acquired by Crain. First, and at that time only, copy editor for the magazine. Copy editing, headline and caption writing, proofreading. Wrote some stories.

Promoted to newly created post from copy editor at this suburban newspaper that competes with Chicago's major metro dailies. Laying out most news pages, and other business and feature pages of the newspaper; overseeing pages until they become plates for the printing press. Worked closely with top editors, copy desk and composing shop. Supervised police reporters.

Joined newspaper during key growth period, when it was increasing frequency to seven days a week. Copy editing, headline and caption writing. Also substituted for copy desk chief, wire editor, night news editor. Wrote some features.

While working nights full time at the Daily Herald, also worked part time days at the Chicago national headquarters of the ABA. Copy editing for the LawScope section of the ABA Journal (which goes to all ABA members) and for Bar Leader (who goes to bar association officers).
