Architected the software behind our credit card payments system to achieve Level 1 PCI Compliance, led the development of our fraud prevention system, wrote a lot of code along the way. Designed and developed software across all parts of the system that improved scalability and uptime of Social Gold. I worked across all tiers of the system from web-facing front-end to back-end services and databases.

In January 2007, I took on a much broader role as the sole Principal Engineer in Retail Systems, the organization owning the software that manages the items that Amazon (as opposed to third parties) sells on its website, through catalog management, forecasting, vendor management, sourcing, and pricing. I played a key role in projects spanning the organization (hardware “rightsizing”, shared file server deprecation, holiday scaling), cross-team projects (general system integration, opening consignment terms to a larger set of vendors), as well as some cross-org projects, such as improved integration with inventory planning and customer fulfillment systems. I also spent a lot of time meeting mentoring engineers within the organization and participating in design reviews.

I spent my first nine years after college at Amazon, starting as an entry-level Software Development Engineer (SDE I), and progressing through three promotions up to my final position as a Principal Engineer. Most of this time was spent developing software for the Procurement team (responsible for ordering goods from vendors), frequently working with other teams and often taking on leadership and mentoring roles. Throughout my career at Amazon I was deeply involved with their hiring process, interviewing over 500 candidates and serving as the lead interviewer in many of these loops.

While getting my Masters degree in Computer Science, I was employed as a research assistant in the Speech Communication department at the University of Illinois. I developed the software behind the initial version of I-KNOW, a web-based system used to study social networks. This software allowed users to select how often they communicate with each of the other people their organization and then visualize the network, among other things.

Created "Brick Attack", a shareware game for the Macintosh, written in C++ with over 600 registered users worldwide.
