Medical Genetics Laboratory: July 2005 to April 2007Perform daily laboratory research in a one staff member laboratory on ectodermal dysplaisa, lethal acrodermatitus, lupoid dermatosis, epidermal buloisa. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment. Request maintenance services on specialized equipment when necessary. Research specialties include; extraction and purification of genomic DNA, extraction and purification of RNA, using RT-PCR to create cDNA libraries. Using genetic material, real-time PCR, in situ hybridizations, standard PCR and gene amplification will be perform to define and understand the disease and its processes. Standard laboratory techniques such as gel purification, solution preparation, sample storage and gene sequencing will be performed as necessary. Technician will also assist the principle investigator in pedigree construction, literature searches, protocol writing and grant preparation. Clinical Studies Laboratory: October 2003 to June 2005Perform daily laboratory research in a one staff member laboratory on hyperthyroidism in feline as a model to human hyperthyroidism. Maintain laboratory supplies and equipment and request servicing when necessary. Research specialties include radioactive measuring of GTP activity in normal and hyperthyroid cell membranes and performing Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization on feline thyroid cell lines to study uptake of critical dietary components. Standard protein assays are performed on all samples using a micro-BCA kit and a 96-well plate reader. All experiments and data are placed in a bound laboratory notebook and findings reported back to the principle investigator. Technician is also responsible for monitoring and decontamination of radioactive cats which receive I-125 treatments for hyperthyroidism.

Summer Work Study Program:Perform daily laboratory set ups for instructors in various college courses such as general biology, molecular biology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, general chemistry and microbiology. Oversees the summer student staff members and trains them in laboratory skills. Other duties as follows, supply ordering, maintain capital equipment inventories, oversee microbiology colonies and assist lab manager in related duties.
