My name is Darrick Smith and I recently graduated from the University at Buffalo’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. While at UB, I was fortunate enough to complete their 3+3 Combined BS/DPT program, which has equipped me with the skills necessary to become a well-informed physical therapist. One of the main factors that led me to choose UB’s DPT program is the extensive amount of time that they offer for clinical experience. In particular, students were given the opportunity to participate in five different clinical affiliations, ultimately accumulating 52 weeks of clinical exposure. Over the course of my graduate academic career, I was able to gain experience in the following settings: 32 weeks in outpatient orthopedics, 12 weeks in acute care, and 8 weeks in subacute rehabilitation. The amount of time devoted to clinical experience is more than nearly any other program in the nation and has allowed me to take concepts and information from the classroom and apply them into practice. Ample opportunities to gain experience in the real-world played a key role in developing my confidence/independence, communication, exercise prescription, and clinical reasoning skills. Given the considerable amount of time that I have spent in the clinic, I can confidently say that I have taken an interest in inpatient rehab, acute care, or one-on-one outpatient orthopedics. I take immense pride in my role as a healthcare provider and movement expert and I look forward to serving all demographics with the highest quality of care. The journey of guiding my patients toward an improved quality of life is both challenging and incredibly rewarding, and I am fully committed to this noble pursuit.Outside of my passion for physical therapy, I enjoy weightlifting, playing hockey and/or golf, spending time with friends and family, traveling, and the outdoors.
