I am on the hunt for true American flavors. What do I mean by that? I mean I am after those fruits and nuts, birds and fish, vegetables and herbs that are truly native to the United States. These are the real American foods, and are the ingredients of place. Along my quest, I hope to find answers to such questions like Why is wild rice only found in the northern reaches of Minnesota and Wisconsin? What is it about Maine’s landscape that makes it so great for low-bush blueberries (and lobster)? What do Olympia oysters tell us about the relative health of Washington’s estuaries? Why do Alaskans regularly enjoy moose, reindeer, and caribou, while people in the lower-48 insist on beef, pork, and chicken? And why aren’t pawpaws, butternuts, shellbark hickories, sassafras, and American persimmons staples in Appalachia today, even though they fed the earliest mountaineers for millennia?Eating Appalachia is the first book in my many chapter journey to rediscover some of America's tastiest yet forgotten flavors.

The Design Center assisted the City of Davenport on planning and urban design projects. The Design Center lended support to the myriad projects in the development of Davenport as a world-class city: pedestrian and recreational amenities along the river front, new housing and commercial centers, neighborhood revitalization efforts, context sensitive infill development, street and corridor redesign, and alternative transportation planning.
