AS assistant coach for the Glentoran U16 NIFL team I play a role in developing youth athletes to reach their maximum potential. This role involves supporting the head coach in planning and leading training sessions, with a focus on refining technical skills, improving tactical awareness, and enhancing players’ physical fitness to match the demands of competitive play. I am also required to closely monitor individual player progress, providing personalized feedback to help each athlete improve in areas like ball manipulation, positioning, and decision-making.We also place an emphasis on teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship, helping players grow not only as athletes but as responsible team members. I may also assist in analyzing game footage, preparing match strategies, and adjusting in-game tactics based on the head coach’s requirements. By working closely with each player, my aims are to help them advance to higher levels of competition within the Glentoran FC club structure or beyond.

At Larne FC, my role initially involved coaching the 2006 age group, where I gained valuable insight into the club’s operations and its ambitious trajectory. Working with this group allowed me to understand the club’s long-term vision, commitment to development, and emphasis on creating a high-performance environment. This experience provided a deeper appreciation for Larne FC's forward-thinking approach, preparing me for broader roles within the club.Following this, I transitioned to the Foundation Phase, playing a key role in establishing the 2015 age group, where I introduced young children to their first experiences in football. My focus was on creating a fun, engaging environment, building foundational skills, and fostering a love for the game. I helped these young players develop basic technical abilities, teamwork, and confidence, ensuring their early exposure to football was positive and supportive.Currently, in the Professional Development Phase, my role see me working at the U15’s and involves creating a positive professional environment centered around player development, I work within a group of highly supportive and skilled staff from multiple disciplines offering a diverse range of expertise. This multidisciplinary team includes professionals with backgrounds in areas such as coaching, sports science, fitness, psychology, and player development, all contributing to a holistic approach to training. This helps to ensure that players not only improve their technical and tactical skills but also grow as individuals, instilling core values such as discipline, teamwork, and respect. Our aim is to help these players become the best versions of themselves, preparing them for potential careers in football while maintaining a focus on holistic growth.

Children are invited into the programme for extra contact time and additional sessions, seeking not only to refine their football skills but also to grow personally and socially. We create a supportive and inclusive environment where young players from diverse backgrounds can come together, fostering friendships and building camaraderie.Through sessions, we focus on skill development, teamwork, and confidence-building, while also encouraging a sense of belonging among players from all walks of life. I strived to serve as both a mentor and coach, helping them not only enhance their football abilities but also develop important life skills such as discipline, communication, and resilience.

I spent a valuable year working with the Knockbreda U20s team, which gave me real insight into the senior end of football. The experience was highly beneficial for me, as it involved much more tactical work and emphasized the importance of personal relationships to gain player buy-in. I also had the opportunity to learn a lot from the experienced and talented staff I worked alongside, which greatly contributed to my own personal growth.

A key aspect of my role was guiding players through player pathways, ensuring they had a clear progression route within the club, from SBYL through to National League and NIFL levels of competition. I worked to identify talent and support their advancement, aligning with the long-term goals for each athlete’s development.Collaboration and teamwork are central to my coaching philosophy. I worked closely with some other fantastic coaches and club staff to ensure consistent training standards, shared knowledge, and maintained a positive, supportive environment. By building strong relationships with players, staff, and parents, we strived to create a cohesive unit focused on the athletes' growth both on and off the field.
