I'm a teacher and researcher at Ulster University. I enjoy both roles and especially bringing state-of-the-art research ideas into my teaching. I have involvement with local industry and have engaged in several knowledge transfer projects included Innovation Vouchers and KTP involving emerging and smart technologies, and health technologies and serious games. My initial education is in Electronics and Microelectronics, though my PhD research was more focused on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms. My research crosses several cutting edge AI and creative industry research areas including virtual reality-based health technologies, games enhanced learning and training, gamification, computational intelligence and games, intelligent interactive storytelling, user/player modelling, and adaptive distributed game architectures. My recent research focus has been on using technologies in serious games contexts. For example, designing games with natural user interfaces for engaging people with brain injury to engage more fully with their upper arm rehabilitation, or supporting and motivating people with multiple sclerosis to take more regular exercise. I'm particularly interested in using assistive technologies that are cheap and accessible enough for people to use in the home by themselves (as a supplement to any supported sessions).
