Schlafen.It took nearly 20 years before the mechanistic principals of this family were revealed - and I applaud the ground breaking revelations of those efforts. Now known to be a collection of transfer and ribosomal RNAses, the family has broad reaching impacts on cellular biology. What remains is understanding how such a critical function in cellular biology is regulated to impart the specificities that no doubt must exist.

Learned mouse genetics and discovered the wonder of T-cell biology. Was fortunate enough to re-discover the importance of 2-ME for driving in vitro lymphocyte immune function. Without that timely realignment of my research efforts, it would have been a very long graduate career.

Moved with Barbara Nepom circa 1986 I believe. Here I continued to hone my Immunology skills studying HLA polymorphisms and mixed class II dimers. Learned lots of great tricks like in-gel hybridization with radiolabeled oligonucleotides (cutting edge for it's time) and various liquid chromatography techniques (and still remember some of those skills!). This was also where I had the opportunity to work more closely with Barbara's husband Jerry Nepom - a very gifted Immunologist. Together the Nepoms gave me unlicensed opportunity for which I will always be indebted, Jerry by the way championed regulatory T-cells long after they lost their appeal...and long before they were back in vogue.

I began life making media with Joli Pinter - would bus to work each afternoon from the UW to downtown and put in an honest four hour shift. Shortly after started working with Patricia Thomas - learned some great skills and got my first taste of Immunology. After graduating in '85, began working with Barbara Nepom as a "real" Immunologist.
