The current roleWhere they are still employed, ambulance technicians are members of the accident and emergency crew, answering 999 calls. Working alongside a paramedic, they give patients potentially lifesaving care at the scene and then get them to hospital as soon as possible. They are often on call - in the middle of the night and in all weathers - and will deal with a wide range of different people and situations.They attend every kind of accident and emergency, sometimes covering considerable distances, using their expert emergency driving skills to get to the scene with the greatest speed possible.The future of ambulance technician postsSignificant changes are affecting the various career roles within ambulance service trusts.Although ambulance service trusts currently employ ambulance technicians, it is no longer possible to enter this role as a new entrant.
