This contract involved work on gamma-ray instrumentation for the detection of illicit nuclear materials and continuing research on astronomical sources and polarisation.The instrumentation work was funded by a mini-PIPSS industrial knowledge transfer grant to perform a feasibility study with Symetrica Ltd, involving research into gamma-ray imagers for homeland security. Two independent designs were studied: A novel rotating modulator allowing the instrument to image continuously in 360 degrees which became the subject of a patent held jointly by Symetrica and the University. The second instrument involved using a commercial off-the-shelf gamma camera combined with a rotationally symmetric coded aperture mask to produce a cheap, but sensitive imager capable of estimating the range to the source. Extensive Geant 4 modelling simulations used in both projects in order to test and verify the design and capabilities of the proposed instruments.Continued research into gamma ray polarimetry and variability of high-energy sources. Carried out investigations into timing analysis of Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients, which resulted in the discovery of two new orbital periods and papers on sources IGR J17544-2619 (Clark et al 2009) and IGR J16465-4507 (Clark et al 2010).
